Going with Larsen to create our engagement ring was the best decision we made! They provided such a supportive and helpful experience throughout the whole process. We connected with Fleur and she was so knowledgeable and friendly. She expertly guided us through the ring customization process, and was able to translate our ideas into the perfect ring. We highly recommend Larsen to all our friends and anyone looking to create a lifelong piece!

My partner and I decided to go on a tour of melbourne jewellers and stumbled across Larsen towards the end of our day. We were looking for a custom made engagement ring and this place blew every other place out the water - admittedly we were a but intimidated walking into the place but were instantly made to feel at ease by Alex who handled the situation incredibly well.

We had a brief idea of what we wanted but Alex asked all the right questions and showed us different compositions and ended up sketching the ring for us and ordering in some stones, all before we paid a cent. We then went in when the stones arrived and OMG. It was perfect, I paid the deposit on the spot, and Bang - the *INCREDIBLE* ring was ready after a couple of months! I cant thank you enough for such an amazing experience. If anyone is thinking about getting a bespoke ring made to fit at a really solid price, don’t hesitate to give these guys a visit!

Thanks again guys! 🫶 1000/10

Find the Perfect Princess Cut Engagement Ring

Celebrate love with the contemporary charm of our princess cut engagement rings. Also known as the square cut or square modified brilliant, princess cut diamonds offer a spectacular square shape with bevelled edges that gently taper inward like an inverted pyramid. The princess cut first appeared in its current form in 1980, but this cut of diamond is as suited to vintage and classic-style rings as it is to contemporary jewellery. No matter what style you choose, the princess cut has a timeless appeal you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

As with every piece we craft at Larsen jewellery, our experienced jewellery designers are passionate about creating ethical, bespoke princess cut engagement rings that are as unique as the love they celebrate. Starting with a one-on-one consultation, we’ll work together to choose from a range of stone settings, precious metals (platinum, rose gold, yellow gold or white gold) and stones – whether that’s a classic diamond or a coloured gemstone such as sapphire.

Explore Our Princess Cut Engagement Rings

With brilliance to rival that of the round brilliant cut, the square princess cut is a contemporary option for your engagement ring. The princess cut, also known as a square modified brilliant, is among the most popular diamond cuts. While it looks fabulous in designs with a modern slant, we also think they look fantastic in Art Deco, vintage-inspired and engraved ring designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? We’re happy to answer them!

What is a princess cut engagement ring?

A princess style engagement ring is a ring which features a princess cut stone, generally a diamond but can also be other gems such as sapphires. This cut is renowned for its iconic sharp-cornered square shape and chic charm. Popular since their invention in the 1980s, modern princess cut stones have a contemporary edge that suits many different styles of jewellery, from minimalist elegance to more elaborate vintage styles.

Is princess cut the best cut for a diamond engagement ring?

While each engagement ring is a truly personal expression, princess cut diamonds have been a popular and classic choice for many years. With their sleek and contemporary geometric shape, the princess or "square" cut diamond has a large table facet and a deep pavilion, with the appearance of an inverted pyramid. The original of this cut was close to a round cut in its facets, but most today have 76 facets for even more brilliance. Contemporary princess cut engagement rings are sophisicated and charming; a perfect choice for those looking for clean-cut elegance.

Do princess cut engagement rings cost more?

Despite the stunning brilliance of princess cut diamonds, this stone cut is not necessarily more expensive than others, being comparable in price to other fancy cuts, such as asscher, cushion or marquise. Princess cuts do need to be set more carefully than round cut stones, but our expert jewellery designers will be able to walk you through this during the design process. Ultimately, the price of any ring depends on any added design elements, as well as the colour, clarity, and cut of any gemstones incorporated.

Why are princess cut diamonds less popular in engagement rings?

Princess cut diamonds are a very popular choice for engagement rings. With origins in the 1960s, the cut we know today emerged in 1980 and was an instant hit among the fashion forward due to its chic shape. The signature brilliance and iconic square shape of these diamonds are perfect for those looking for a sharp, geometric and elegant look.

Why choose a princess cut engagement ring?

The princess cut, with its decidedly contemporary charm and recognisably fashionable shape, is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a striking yet elegant ring style. This cut is very versatile, being just as at home in chic contemporary styles as in old world designs with vintage elements, so both modern and classic princess cut engagement rings are popular choices.

Is a princess cut or round cut more expensive for an engagement ring?

Typically, a princess cut gem considered on its own will be slightly less expensive than the standard round cut, but this can vary, and its shape does need to be carefully considered while creating an engagement ring design. Overall, the value of any diamond or gemstone will depend mostly on factors such as size, clarity and colour.

Why is a princess cut engagement ring cheaper?

Princess cut diamonds will often be cheaper than a round cut due to the difference in the cutting process. The square shape of a princess cut is closer to the shape of a diamond's natural octahedron crystal structure, which means there is typically less wastage when cutting the shape from the original rough diamond when compared with a round cut.

Is there an ideal depth for a princess cut engagement ring?

A depth percentage within the range of 65-75% is generally considered well-proportioned, as a stone within this range retains brilliance while appearing visually balanced. At Larsen Jewellery, we endeavour to source stones which are as well-cut as possible, so our stones will generally fall within ideal ratios. This means that personal preference and how the stone appears to you will often be more important than technical factors, but if you would like to know more about ideal depths or other ratios, our knowledgable jewellery designers would be happy to walk you through these elements in order to find the best possible stone for you.

Can I get a princess cut engagement ring with a coloured gemstone?

You can certainly personalise a princess cut engagement ring with a coloured gemstone. Sapphires and fancy colour diamonds in particular are popular alternative choices to the traditional white diamond, as their bright colours look stunning paired with the sharp angles of the princess cut. Adding coloured gemstones to your design is another way to express your individual style and create a meaningful engagement ring that stands out.
