Is princess cut or round cut more expensive?
Generally a princess cut diamond is less expensive than a round brilliant per carat. To match the size of a round brilliant from above, a princess cut diamond will probably need a higher carat weight.
Why is princess cut cheaper?
Princess cuts like most fancy cuts are less expensive for a few reasons: the demand for round is much higher so it tends to be the default choice for cut with pretty much every raw mined diamond, and round brilliant stones generally have more wastage when being cut for engagement rings and jewellery than other diamond shapes.
Does a solitaire design make a diamond look bigger?
While a solitaire design doesn’t necessarily make a stone look bigger, if you choose a solitaire setting, there are a few different ways to make your stone look bigger than it is. A solitaire design makes the stone your focal point. If you get the best cut you can, the brilliance and sparkle of the stone should make it seem bigger.
You can also play with the band width, and slimming it down a bit (like our Ballerina) to heighten the contrast with the stone. Settings like bezel, cathedral and 4 prong can all highlight and heighten the perceived size of the diamond. If you want your stone to look larger and don’t necessarily want to go for a larger carat weight, an experienced jeweller should be able to help you find the right design for what you’re looking for.
