Yellow gold is a traditional choice of metal for engagement rings and remains popular. At Larsen Jewellery, we typically use 18ct yellow gold, this contains 75% pure gold and provides the best combination of strength and purity. Many engagement rings made using yellow gold are made in combination with white gold, which is most often used for diamond settings.
Yellow gold can also be a striking choice of metal for stones other than white or colourless diamonds, as it can either enhance the colour (in the case of yellow sapphires or champagne diamonds) or contrast the colour (as it does with emeralds, rubies and sapphire designs). Metal choice can be a way to subtly change the impact of an engagement ring design and our skilled jewellers would be able to help you understand the influence of metal choice on your engagement ring.

At its purest, gold is 24ct – that is, the metal contains only gold and no additional metals. 18ct is 75% pure and is generally alloyed with metals such as silver or copper. Despite its purity, 24ct gold is generally unsuited to everyday wear, being soft and vulnerable to wear and damage. 18ct gold combines a high level of purity with the durability to suit a lifetime of wear.
24ct gold engagement rings are possible but these tend to be impractical for everyday wear. This level of purity is uncommon for modern yellow gold engagement rings as it is very soft and easily damaged. 18ct gold offers the best combination of purity and practicality, ensuring you can enjoy wearing your engagement ring everyday.
750 is the hallmark for 18ct gold. This number represents the purity of the gold – 750 parts gold per 1000 parts total.
