What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?

There are two common ways Lab grown diamonds are created. Both are produced in a controlled laboratory environment. The first method is HPHT which stands for High Pressure, High Temperature. This technique simulates the extreme heat and pressure of the earth’s mantle. The other method is CVD which stands for Chemical Vapour Disposition. CVD diamonds are grown with less pressure and heat with the aid of carbon rich gasses. Both types of laboratory grown diamonds are chemically identical to mined diamonds. This means they share the same physical and optical properties. They exhibit the same fire and sparkle as mined diamonds and are graded using the same 4Cs as the major grading laboratories.

Sustainable Lab Grown Diamonds

Not all lab-grown diamonds are created equally. It is true that lab-grown diamonds may not have the same environmental impact on the earth as mined diamonds. However, they do consume a considerable amount of energy during the production process.

As an ethically-minded business, we choose to source sustainable and ethical lab-grown diamonds.  We have selected companies that align with our core values. We consistently research our suppliers to ensure our high ethical standards are upheld along our supply chain.

Being a carbon-neutral business, we partner with laboratories at the forefront of sustainability.  Our preferred suppliers advocate ethical, sustainable, and environmentally responsible practices. These suppliers uphold the five pillars of sustainability under the SCS 007 jewellery standard. They use clean, renewable energy as per the ‘SCS Global’ sustainability audit process. Hydro and solar power is used to grow their diamonds, honouring our commitment to our certified carbon neutrality status.

We make it our mission to be completely transparent, genuine, and unbiased in all our business practices. This allows us to offer you lab-grown diamonds of the highest ethical integrity.

Natural Diamonds vs Lab Grown Diamonds

Both natural and man-made diamonds are forms of crystallised carbon. They share the same physical, chemical, and optical properties and highly specialised equipment is required to tell them apart. To the naked eye, lab-grown and natural diamonds appear the same. The notable differences are in their origin and the time taken to grow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? We’re happy to answer them!

ARE LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS THE SAME AS REAL DIAMONDS?

Lab-grown diamonds are identical to mined diamonds sharing the same physical and optical properties. Both are forms of crystallised carbon and exhibit the same fire, scintillation, and sparkle. The biggest difference is that lab diamonds are grown in a much shorter time to form than their natural counterparts.

DO LAB GROWN DIAMONDS COME WITH A CERTIFICATE?

Yes, our lab-grown diamonds are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by one of the leading diamond grading laboratories including IGI, GIA and GCAL.

ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS ETHICAL?

At Larsen Jewellery, we proudly align ourselves with growers that are ethically responsible. This ensures that our diamonds comply with the highest ethical standards.

HOW ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS GRADED?

As they have the same chemical and physical properties, lab-grown and natural diamonds are graded in the same way. They're assessed on the same 4Cs as the major international grading laboratories (cut, colour, clarity and carat).

ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

While lab-grown diamonds may not have the same environmental impact on the earth as mined diamonds, they still require a lot of energy to produce. Our preferred suppliers are committed to using clean, renewable energy including hydro and solar power to grow their diamonds, minimising their environmental footprint, making them an environmentally conscious choice.

CAN YOU TELL THAT A DIAMOND IS LAB GROWN?

No, to the naked eye, it is not possible to tell the difference between a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond. Only an experienced gemmologist, with specialised equipment, can distinguish the difference.
