The Four C's

The first step in understanding diamonds, is to get to know the The 4Cs; cut, colour, clarity and carat. The 4Cs is the universally accepted method for assessing and communicating the quality of a diamond. Understanding these different characteristics and how they affect the appearance of a diamond, will help you to make an informed and confident choice when choosing the right diamond for you.

Learn about cut

Cut

The cut of a diamond determines its brilliance and refers to its proportions, symmetry and finish. Put simply, the better it has been cut, the more it will sparkle.

Learn about colour

Colour

A diamond’s colour grade refers to the lack of colour. In other words, diamonds that are white, containing little or no colour, receive higher quality grades than those with visible colour.

Learn about clarity

Clarity

Clarity refers to the presence (or absence) of tiny impurities or blemishes within or on the surface of a diamond. These imperfections are also known as inclusions.

Learn about carat

Carat

Carat is a term that refers to the weight of a diamond, although people usually associate it with size. The carat weight is often the factor that people will vary to find a diamond within their budget.

Other Diamond Characteristics

Beyond the 4Cs there are other, lesser-known characteristics that may be important considerations when choosing the right diamond for you. Get to know these in more detail below.

Learn about diamond shapes

Shape

Diamonds come in many different shapes including round (Brilliant), square (Princess), cushion, emerald, asscher, radiant, oval and pear. All diamond shapes have different attributes, but the overall beauty of the individual shapes is a matter of personal taste.

Learn about GIA certificates

Certificate

A diamond certificate outlines a diamond’s exact measurements, weight, cut and overall quality. Larsen Jewellery’s loose diamonds come with independent certificates from leading labs such as GIA.

Learn about fluorescence

Fluorescence

Fluorescence is the visible emission of light which occurs when a diamond is exposed to Ultraviolet Light. Most diamonds have very little fluorescence which does not influence the quality or visual appeal of the diamond.

Learn about coloured diamonds

Coloured Diamonds

Natural diamonds come in many colours including pink, champagne, cognac, blue and black. These colours are generally referred to as “fancy colours”.
